NEW CD Chopin University Press | Staropolskie Pieśni Adwentowe

Krzysztof Pawlisz organ Vocal Ensemble of the Department of Church Music of the Chopin University of Music

The two-disc album contains Old Polish Advent songs presented in the context of preludes and organ accompaniments referring to the 17th-century Kražiai Organ Tablature. Each song is preceded by an improvised organ prelude and performed with organ accompaniment; the organ is played by the album’s originator – Krzysztof Pawlisz. The artist is joined by the Vocal Ensemble of the Department of Church Music of the Chopin University of Music.

The song lyrics were selected according to the criterion of usability – verses that remain in common use are sung according to their modernised versions. “At the same time, stanzas whose singing tradition has been interrupted appear in their original form, most often according to the songbooks of Fr Michał Marcin Mioduszewski (from 1838) and Fr Jan Siedlecki (from 1928). At some moments, one may have the impression that the unity of style has been violated, but the overriding idea was to maintain consistency with the living performance tradition, not to create a homogenous reconstruction in terms of source materials.” (Krzysztof Pawlisz). The idea for the album was to look for a new stylistic value, which was created from the combination of historical material with the improviser’s individual performance technique, based on a living performance tradition of songs that captivate with their unique character and atmosphere. The material was recorded on the 17th-century Hans Hummel and Jerzy Nitrowski organ in the Basilica of St Andrew the Apostle in Olkusz. The recordings were made on 23–27 October 2023 on the 17th-century Hans Hummel and Jerzy Nitrowski organ in the Basilica of St Andrew in Olkusz.
