Admission to the Doctoral School of the Chopin University of Music

The Doctoral School of the Chopin University of Music is a space for advanced artistic and academic research, created for outstanding graduates of second-cycle (Master’s) studies who wish to develop at the intersection of artistic creativity, scholarly reflection, and teaching practice. Admission to the UMFC Doctoral School is conducted through a competitive process and takes place once every two years. The next admission round is planned for 2026.

Admission Regulations

The admission procedure is conducted in accordance with the University’s current internal regulations, as set out in Resolution No. 63/79/2025 of the UMFC Senate, adopted in 2025. This document precisely defines the conditions, procedures, and stages of the admission process, ensuring transparency and a high academic standard throughout.

Who May Apply?

Applicants to the Doctoral School must:
• hold a Master’s degree or an equivalent qualification,

• demonstrate appropriate aptitude for conducting independent academic or artistic research,
• present a significant artistic or scholarly record relevant to the planned doctoral project.

Formal Stage – Documentation

Applicants are required to submit a complete set of admission documents, including, inter alia:
• an application for admission to the Doctoral School,

• a research or artistic–research project proposal,
• documentation of previous achievements (portfolio, list of publications, recordings, concerts, etc.).

Substantive Stage – Examinations

The qualification procedure includes:
• a practical examination assessing the applicant’s artistic level,

• an interview focused on evaluating the doctoral project concept, research maturity, and motivation to undertake doctoral studies at the Doctoral School.

Assessment Criteria

The Admissions Committee evaluates applicants in particular on the basis of:
• the quality and originality of the research or artistic–research project,

• the level of previous artistic and scholarly achievements,
• the results of the entrance examinations and the interview.
