Jan Duszyński

composition

A composer of concert, theatre, and film music. Graduate of the Composition Department at the Warsaw University of Music under Prof. Stanisław Moryto, and The Juilliard School of Music in New York under Prof. Christopher Rouse.

Recipient of the Kościuszko Foundation scholarship, the Witold Lutosławski scholarship, the Marvin Hamilsh scholarship, and the Gretchaninoff Memorial Prize. He participated in the master composition courses in Aspen, Colorado, led by Steve Mackey and John Corigliano, among others.

His artistic achievements have been recognized with numerous prestigious awards, including a prize for "Distant Place" for baritone and string quartet at the Adam Didur Competition. In theatre music, he has received awards for his work on productions including "The Sexual Life of Savages," "Robert Robur" (Zbigniew Raszewski Theatre Institute Award), "The Peasants," and most recently "Antigone in Molenbeek" (Divine Comedy Festival 2024). In the same year, his music for "Little Red Riding Hood" was also distinguished. His score for the film "Jack Strong" was nominated for the Polish Eagle Award.

A significant milestone in his career was the 2016 premiere of his opera "Job," commissioned by the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich. Jan has composed over a hundred soundtracks for theatre productions and films. He collaborates with theaters across Poland, USA, Germany, Lithuania, Austria, France, and Denmark, creating music for acclaimed directors such as Anna Smolar, Krzysztof Warlikowski, Krzysztof Garbaczewski, Ewelina Marciniak, Michał Zadara, Barbara Wysocka, Władysław Pasikowski, Piotr Cieplak, and Agnieszka Glińska.

In recent years, he has fulfilled commissions from leading Polish ensembles, including Sinfonia Varsovia, the National Forum of Music Symphony Orchestra, the Lutosławski String Quartet, Kwartludium, Duo Twogether, Aukso Orchestra, and the Transemble Quintet.

Jan shares his knowledge and experience as a lecturer in theatre music at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music and the Aleksander Zelwerowicz Theatre Academy in Warsaw.
