Dariusz Machej

Graduate of the Fryderyk Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw, where he studied voice under Professor Włodzimierz Zalewski. He further refined his vocal artistry in masterclasses with Professor Ryszard Karczykowski and William Matteuzzi.

From 1985 to 1995, he was a soloist with the “Śląsk” Song and Dance Ensemble and the State Folk Song and Dance Ensemble “Mazowsze.” He is also a graduate of the Fryderyk Chopin Secondary State Music School in Warsaw, where he studied voice with Edward Pawlak. In 1997, he made his debut as Don Magnifico in G. Rossini’s La Cenerentola at the Warsaw Chamber Opera under the baton of Stefan Sutkowski.

Dariusz Machej collaborates with the Grand Theatre – Polish National Opera, Lublin Opera, Polish Royal Opera, Warsaw Chamber Opera, the Grand Theatre in Łódź, Wrocław Opera, and the Kraków Philharmonic.

He has also worked with, among others, Anhaltisches Theater Dessau, Oper Frankfurt am Main, Wuppertaler Bühnen, Wiener Kammeroper, the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre, Theater der Stadt Koblenz, Samsung Performing Arts Theater / Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra, the Grand Theatre in Poznań, Baltic Opera, Podlasie Opera and Philharmonic, Silesian Opera, Kraków Opera, Opera at the Castle in Szczecin, NOSPR, the National Philharmonic, Szczecin Philharmonic, Poznań Philharmonic, Baltic Philharmonic, Pomeranian Philharmonic, Opole Philharmonic, and Lublin Philharmonic.

He has appeared at numerous music festivals, including the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro, the Festival de Musique de Strasbourg, the “Rossini in Wildbad” Belcanto Opera Festival in Germany, the Euroradio/EBU Summer Festival in Warsaw, the Anima Mundi Sacred Music Festival in Pisa, the Internationale Maifestspiele in Wiesbaden, the International Moniuszko Festival, Warsaw Autumn, Wratislavia Cantans, the Adam Didur Festival in Sanok, and the Ludwig van Beethoven Easter Festival. He also took part in the world premieres of Kurt Schwertsik’s Katzelmacher in Wuppertal and Zygmunt Krauze’s Yvonne, Princess of Burgundy in Paris.

Dariusz Machej’s repertoire includes such operas as Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni, Die Zauberflöte, and Così fan tutte; Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia, La Cenerentola, Il turco in Italia, L’italiana in Algeri, La gazza ladra, La pietra del paragone, La cambiale di matrimonio, and Il viaggio a Reims; Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore, Don Pasquale, and Lucrezia Borgia; Weber’s Der Freischütz; Berlioz’s La damnation de Faust; Verdi’s La forza del destino and La traviata; Moniuszko’s Halka (Vilnius version), Halka, The Countess, and Verbum nobile; Bizet’s Carmen; Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi, La bohème, Tosca, and Turandot; Wagner’s Lohengrin, Parsifal, and Tristan und Isolde; Strauss’s Elektra, Salome, and Ariadne auf Naxos; Ullmann’s The Emperor of Atlantis; Paderewski’s Manru; Giordano’s Andrea Chénier; Szymanowski’s Hagith; Berg’s Wozzeck; Martinů’s The Greek Passion; Penderecki’s The Black Mask; Britten’s Peter Grimes; Czajkowski’s The Merchant of Venice; Stefani’s The Supposed Miracle, or Cracovians and Highlanders; Kurpiński’s Superstition, or Cracovians and Highlanders; and Knapik’s Moby Dick.

Dariusz Machej has undertaken numerous artistic tours in Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Spain, Lithuania, China, Russia, Lebanon, Japan, the United States, and Canada.

The artist also performs in oratorio and song repertoire. He has taken part in numerous radio and television broadcasts (RAI, Südwestrundfunk, Polish Radio, TVP, Polsat). He has made many recordings for record labels including Naxos, ROF, Bongiovanni, DUX, the Polish Radio Recording Agency, as well as for the Polish Radio archives. The recording of Szymanowski’s Hagith featuring the artist received the Fryderyk 2020 award in the Classical Music category: Oratorio and Opera Album of the Year, while the recording of Noskowski’s Revenge for the Boundary Wall received the Fryderyk 2024 award in the same category.

Dariusz Machej is a recipient of the Silver Medal for Merit to Culture – Gloria Artis.
