CU Cinema: "Carmen", dir. Carlos Saura (1983)
Join us for a unique film - musical and dance - whose plot, like Georges Bizet's famous opera, is derived from Prosper Mérimé's novella "Carmen." Directed and choreographed in flamenco style by Carlos Saura and María Pagés, it is the second part of Saura's 1980s flamenco trilogy.
Renowned choreographer Antonio is preparing the ballet "Carmen" with his company. Everyone is ready to start rehearsals, but Antonio is still not sure who should perform the title part. Prima ballerina Cristina, originally envisioned for the role, seems too old and not "fiery" enough. He searches for the Carmen he has dreamed of. He finds her unexpectedly in one of the dance halls. Fascinated by each other, they become lovers. Carmen, however, remains poised and independent.
"Carmen" by Carlos Saura is primarily a film of gesture, mimicry, dance, conveying thoughts with the body rather than with words, in which the role of dialogue has been reduced to a minimum. Nominated for an Oscar and a Golden Globe in 1984, it won awards at Cannes and Montreal.
