Marian Sawa (1937–2005) – composer, organist, improviser, and teacher
Marian Sawa’s abundant compositional output, comprising about 800 works, includes five organ concertos, Assemblage for symphony orchestra, hundreds of pieces for solo organ and for two performers, piano, harpsichord works, chamber music for string and wind instruments with the accompaniment of organ or piano, hundreds of choral compositions a cappella and with organ accompaniment, and many oratorio and cantata forms. Organ music constitutes the core of Sawa’s output (over 200 pieces). It is in this type of music that the composer’s stylistic idiom is most distinguished, and the unique quality of these compositions puts him among the most outstanding creators of the 20th-century organ music. These pieces encompass various genres and levels of difficulty – from miniatures, preludes, and didactic works, to cyclical and monumental forms, including sonatas, fantasies, toccatas, partitas, and concertos.
