Krzysztof Bąkowski
violin
Krzysztof Bąkowski, born in Warsaw in a family of musicians, is continuing the family tradition. Encouraged by his father Zenon Bąkowski, violinist and pedagogue of great renown, he too began to play the violin. He studied at the Frederic Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw and Indiana University, Bloomington, USA under professors Tadeusz Wroński and Josef Gingold to name a few. He won the T. Wroński Solo Violin Competition in Warsaw in 1990.
Krzysztof Bąkowski has performed and lectured at a number of music festivals including festivals in Louisville, Rotterdam, Wrocław, Katowice, Lerchenborg, Warsaw, Łańcut, Odense, Minsk, Poznań, Gdańsk, Puebla, Arnhem, Kraków, Apeldoorn, Duszniki, and Berlin. He has played with leading Polish orchestras including the Polish Radio National Symphony Orchestra (NOSPR), Sinfonia Varsovia, and the National Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Antoni Wit, Jerzy Maksymiuk and Jacek Kaspszyk and others.
Krzysztof Bąkowski has given several dozen first renderings of Polish and world works. Many of these pieces were dedicated to him. He has been the first to perform in public the violin works of such composers as Henryk Mikołaj Górecki, Paweł Szymański, Hanna Kulenty, Tadeusz Wielecki, Jerzy Kornowicz, and Aleksander Lasoń. He has also made over 50 recordings for radio and television broadcasters in Poland, Germany, Denmark and Holland including first recordings of Roman Palester’s violin concerto and Grażyna Bacewicz’s violin concerto (with NOSPR). His recording of Witold Lutosławski’s Partita and Chain II with the Polish Radio Great Symphony Orchestra (WOSPR) under Antoni Wit, registered on CD by Naxos, was a great success in terms of sales and excellent reviews. For many years now this record has been selling all over the world and has received many awards and prizes including the prestigious Diapason d’Or awarded by the French critics.
Krzysztof Bąkowski is now Professor at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music and concertmaster of the National Philharmonic Orchestra in Warsaw.
