THE AUDIOVISUAL INTERACTION LABORATORY VIDEOLAB

The Audiovisual Interaction Laboratory VideoLAB, established at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music, is created and managed by Dr. Andrzej Artymowicz. Lecturer at the Faculty of Sound Engineering, Department of Musical Acoustics and Multimedia. In addition to his contribution in the form of extensive professional experience, Dr. Artymowicz greatly supports VideoLAB with his equipment.

The laboratory carries out both didactic and research tasks. We study the interaction of image with sound, vibroacoustics, human color sensitivity, as well as the broadly understood perception of image and sound.

The Laboratory has created many visual and audiovisual multimedia projects designed and built by Dr. Artymowicz. Documentary films created by teachers, student short films, etudes, live video productions and documentation of UMFC events are also created here. Video projects are being produced for the UMFC Promotion Department, including for use in the vertical Digital Signage screen system. Video projects for projection in the Chopin University Cinema, videos for promoting the UMFC, e.g. on several dozen-meter screens at Metro stations, or films for use on the UMFC YouTube channel.

Dr. Artymowicz delivers a wide range of lectures in VideoLAB on subjects such as: "Basics of cinematography", "Basics of image editing and postprocessing", "Basics of 3D sound", "Digital image distribution", "Film and television technology", "Audiovisual recordings" or "Multimedia promotion". Some of the subjects are available to students of all UMFC faculties.

The laboratory has a wide range of professional vision devices from advanced vintage editing systems based on Betacam digital video recorders, image generators, professional CRT, LCD, OLED monitors and video signal analyzers. 6K video camera systems equipped with advanced Leica optics. Video footage is edited on world-renowned Blackmagic systems and provide final masters in Standard Dynamic Range (SDR) and High Dynamic Range (HDR) techniques. For creating music and sound design, the Laboratory is equipped with MIDI keyboards, sequencers and a wide range of modern synthesizers and samplers.

Research is carried out using microcontrollers for generating images as well as Raspberry computers programmed for specific experiments. We also have advanced colorimeters, spectrometers, stroboscopes and a number of professional measuring devices necessary for assessing light parameters or the properties of projectors and monitors.

The teaching effects of students work are presented at the annual popular UMFC artistic event called "Multimedia May Day". During this event, students present short films. Unlike typical film sound classes, during classes at VideoLAB, students have full freedom to edit not only the sound track, but also video tracks. This freedom significantly broadens their imagination and creative horizons. We place selected student films on the VideoLAB playlist of the UMFC film channel on YouTube.

VideoLAB cooperates with the Polish branch of SMPTE (Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers), an over 100-year-old organization that sets standards for image and sound production in the world of film and television. We recently hosted the head of this organization at our University.
