Timbral Ear Training: 50 Years of Development and Practice
In 1976, a pioneering ear-training programme, known as Timbre Solfège, was introduced into the sound engineering curriculum at the Chopin University of Music in Warsaw, Poland. What began as an innovative teaching experiment soon opened new pathways in ear-training methodology. In the decades that followed, timbral ear-training programmes, adapted to diverse educational and professional contexts, were introduced at academic and training institutions worldwide.
Marking the 50th anniversary of Timbre Solfege, this symposium offers an opportunity to explore contemporary approaches to timbral ear training across a variety of educational settings. It will also provide a forum for discussing the methodological foundations of the discipline in light of ongoing advances in psychoacoustic research and the rapid evolution of audio engineering technologies.
The symposium will be held in the Karol Szymanowski Auditorium at the Chopin University of Music. The programme will include both on-site presentations and remote presentations by speakers joining online. The entire symposium will be livestreamed on the University’s YouTube channel.
