Chopin University Chamber Orchestra

Rafał Janiak Artistic Manager
Aleksander Zwierz Inspector

The Orchestra was formed in 2017 as an initiative of the Rector of UMFC  Professor Klaudiusz Baran and the then Orchestra Inspector and its present Manager Aleksander Zwierz. The conductor Rafał Janiak was entrusted with artistic management.
While setting up the Orchestra, the idea was to carefully select musicians so that the it could present a diverse and often innovative programme, not only within the walls of the UMFC, but also beyond, promoting this way a high artistic level of the University. The members of the Orchestra are outstanding students, selected during a multistage audition process. The core of the Orchestra are string instruments, but – depending on the needs – it cooperates with almost each outstanding instrumentalist linked with the UMFC.  The way the Orchestra functions is a novelty to other similar musical groups active in other artistic schools, which translates into its high artistic level and adds a unique value to the musical events that it plays in.
In spite of still short practice, the Orchestra can boast numerous achievements. Since the very beginning, it has cooperated with the Chancellery of the President of the Republic of Poland, honouring with its performance important events with the participation of President Andrzej Duda and most distinguished personalities of culture in Poland, playing several concerts in the Presidential Palace including the occasion of 200th Anniversary of the death of Tadeusz Kościuszko, during the concert ‘Narodowe Granie’ (National Playing) on 200th Anniversary of the birth of  Stanisław Moniuszko, but also in the Palace of Nations (UN Office) in Geneva on 100th anniversary of Poland regaining independence, in cooperation with such outstanding conductors as Grzegorz Nowak or Marcin Nałęcz -Niesiołowski.
In 2017, under the imprint of Chopin University Press, the Orchestra conducted by Rafał Janiak, released its debut album with the music of B.Britten, K.Penderecki and D.Szostakowicz. In the autumn of 2019 the next record of contemporary Polish accordion concerts appeared, featuring the accordion soloist Rafał Grząka.
The ChUChO frequently accompanies important events at the UMFC, playing during the ceremony of awarding Maestro Arvo Pärt the Honorary Degree honoris causa, the monographic concert dedicated to the works of Prof.  Stanisław Moryto or commemorating 200th Anniversary of the birth of Stanisław Moniuszko.
In the July of 2019, the Orchestra made an over a month-long tour across China, where it played over 20 concerts in the most prestigious concert halls and in the Shanghai Poly Grand Theatre, among others. This first event of its kind in the history of our University was greeted with great enthusiasm by Chinese audience and critics.
In December 2020, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the events of December ’70, Gdańsk Polish Radio  (‘Polskie Radio Gdańsk’) released an album where the Orchestra performed Rafał Janiak’s piece Threnody of December (‘Grudniowy Tren’). The record’s release was preceded by concerts in Gdynia and Gdańsk, where apart from pieces by K.Penderecki, M.P.Górecki or P.Łukaszewski, R.Janiak’s work from the Album was premiered.
